During a brief visit back to the Province, keen tennis player, Senator George Mitchell officially opened the Belfast Boat Club 4 court dome. A Democratic Senator in the Clinton administration George Mitchell played a leading role in peace negotiations here in Northern Ireland. During this period he often played tennis at the Belfast Boat Club and with these fond memories he returned for a quick game together with his son Andrew.
Home to Northern Ireland’s largest tennis club, the Belfast Boat Club pioneered covered tennis when they erected the first three court dome in the country ten years ago. That original membrane had to replaced this year so covering seven courts has been a considerable investment of £200,000 for the club.
Boat Club Manager Doreen Brett commented, ‘The Club hosts and competes in all the major tournaments, has a strong coaching academy and is gearing up to host the World Police and Fire games next year, so giving people the chance to play and train all year round is a necessity rather than a luxury.’
